Marukibune
The Marukibune was invented to fish on the rough rocky shore of Oga, and was built from a single log of cedar.
Kept simple and bold in the making process.
At least 300-year-old logs are cut down from the mountain, hollowed out and shaped to completion.
The boat is around 6m long and 1m wide. Sometimes as a fishing boat. Sometimes it's for transporting luggage. And at other times, as a means of transportation to the neighboring villages.
It was once widely used in the coastal areas of Ojika. It doesn't break against rocks, doesn't get swept away by the tide or wind, and doesn't overturn easily when crossing waves. It is said to have a life span of 100 years.
The Marukibune is now designated as a national important folk cultural asset, and both the original and replicas are on display throughout the city.
It is exhibited at Toga Shioto Fishing Port (near Oga Aquarium's parking lot), in front of the Shinzan Shrine, in the Namahage Kan (inside the Kan), in the Oga Civic and Cultural Center, and in the Oga Hotel parking lot.
